Tuesday 19 January
We
disembarked without any trouble and walked the short distance to pick up our
car. Before 9.30 we were on our way back up to the Bay of Islands.
Our route
went via the West coast and through the Waipoua Forest, the home of the largest
Kauri tree in the country. We even had time for the short stop in Kawakawa to
take a look at the famous Hundertwasser toilets. They have to be seen to be
believed!
We arrived
at our accommodation in Paihia around 5pm and were delighted with the motel we
were staying in.
All the way up the coast we were treated with glimpses of the west coast
The agapanthus growing wild on the road side were amazing through the North Island
The views of the forest as far as the eye can see
We were really treated to some typical New Zealand road conditions
Winding roads abound
The largest kauri tree in New Zealand, sacred to the Maori
The canopy of the tree can be seen above the surrounding trees from a nearby park
Views, views .....
and when we came out of the forest, more views
In Kawakawa there is a most unusual tourist attraction
The public toilets!
